Evolution of the Western Interior Seaway in west-central Alberta (late Campanian, Canada): Implications for hydrocarbon exploration

This study presents the first integrated, high-resolution stratigraphic analysis of a large area Cretaceous Western Interior Basin in Alberta (western Canada), providing new tools to discriminate sedimentary processes and patterns transgressive-regressive (T-R) cycles correlative marine non-marine domains. We integrate gamma ray well-log analysis, measured sections, paleontological data determine sediment accumulation distribution during second-order T-R cycle late Campanian Seaway over previously unstudied encompassing approximately 97,000 km2 foreland basin. The Bearpaw Formation, historically regarded as product single transgression, is shown include two cycles, whose timing constrained by chronostratigraphic that provides an unprecedented resolution (~200 kyr) for western North America. Seven reference markers were mapped across from deposits into fluvial 3D-modelled surfaces intervals resulted isopach maps consecutive systems tracts, allowing detailed interpretations their architecture accumulation. Our paleogeographic Seaway, focusing primarily on evidence paleo-coastlines documented cycles. fine-grained, marine, sediments effective seal hydrocarbon Belly River Group. Further oil migration upsection, within Edmonton group, was prevented occurrence these sealing units. Data support interpretation eustasy provided main control evolution Campanian.
